Chamber FAQs

Chamber vacancies are advertised on a weekly basis here. A new listing is released by 5.30pm every Tuesday.

All vacancies are advertised for a minimum of one week. If an application is not received for a room then this vacancy will roll over to the following week.

If you are interested in viewing our accommodation please visit the BCL office to organise access. No appointment is required.

You may apply for chambers by completing an application online.

Applications for chambers close at 5.30pm every Monday. Under no circumstances are late applications accepted.

When calculating rental costs various aspects are considered including the size, location, floor level, common area space, internal or external room.

Rooms are allocated on a seniority basis or according to the Group Allocation Policy. Please refer to the Chambers Allocation Policy for further details.

All of our tenants must agree to our standard terms and conditions, outlined in the Chamber Allocation Policy which was established over the course of our longstanding relationship with the Bar.

Chambers are allocated according to the established ‘seniority rule’, unless certain circumstances apply. The rule is set out in this policy.

Please refer to the Chambers Allocation Policy for guidelines of the Group Allocation Policy.

Barristers can also apply to sub-let a chambers. Please refer to the Chambers Allocation Policy for more details.

BCL may allow a tenant to take the tenancy of an adjacent vacant room in order to enlarge his or her chambers. Please refer to the Chambers Allocation Policy for more details.

Alterations to a tenant’s chamber must not be made without the prior approval of Facilities Management. Please refer to the Chambers Allocation Policy for more details.

In the event that you misplace your security pass or chambers key please contact the Service Desk on 03 9225 8888 for a replacement.

A security deposit is charged for each item and is fully refundable upon return to the office. These charges vary according to building.

For professional reasons, many barristers and readers choose to have signage installed
in the lift lobby of chambers as well as on their chamber door. BCL can order signage
on your behalf and have it installed. To organise signage please complete this form.

BCL requires 30 days written notice of your intention to vacate chambers. You will either need to provide this in a letter or email.

Chambers can be shared by a maximum of three people.

The barrister in chambers will need to complete a share chambers form to notify BCL of their intention.
