Owen Dixon West Purchase BCL has now settled on the purchase of Owen Dixon West. The purchase was announced recently and after some pressure to do so, the Chairman of BCL, Mark Derham QC, summarised his thoughts about the purchase as follows:

“The completion of the purchase of ODCW is a significant event in the life of the Victorian Bar and Barristers’ Chambers. The building is, with ODCE, the home of the Bar and the place in which many of the activities of the Bar take place. Like every Australian, the Bar sees distinct advantages in owning its own home. Ownership of the land and building will enhance the assets of Barristers’ Chambers and help secure the future financial strength of the Bar. It has been a long-standing ambition of the Bar to own ODCW and to secure the home of the Bar for future generations of Barristers.”

It has been a busy year for BCL and the board and staff would like to pass on our greetings for the festive season and wish everyone a happy and healthy new year. We look forward to our continued development in 2010.

Announcement from the Bar Council and the Board of Barristers Chambers Limited: Purchase of Owen Dixon Chambers West BCL has purchased the land and buildings of Owen Dixon Chambers West at 525 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, on Friday last week for $54M (plus GST). It joins ownership of the two Owen Dixon Chambers (West and East) – which are already linked in physical terms and releases the Bar from constraints as a tenant of a commercial building. This purchase means a security of tenure of chambers provided by the Bar that are close to the Courts for current and future generations of Victorian barristers.

The acquisition will strengthen and consolidate the asset base of the Bar and fulfils the original objective of the Bar when it purchased the land at 525 Lonsdale Street in 1979 – which was to own the Chambers built on it. The decision to purchase was made after detailed reviews and advice on the commercial property market and investment advisors, valuation advice and engineering advice on the building integrity and capital works options to bring the building up to an operational standard.

For further information, a memo is up in the Members section of the Bar website. Please click here to read the memo. (If you require assistance with your log-in details, contact miriam.sved@vicbar.com.au.)
